Q: What is the difference between various methods of treatment in traditional Chinese medicine?
A:
The most popular ‘surface’ therapies of traditional Chinese medicine are acupuncture, acupressure and moxibustion.
In acupuncture, the healing effect is achieved by stimulation of active points by metal needles. In acupressure, this effect is accomplished without needles; by pressure stimulation. In moxibustion, the active points are stimulated by heat. Heat comes from burning moxa applied closely to the specific points (moxa consists of pressed dry plants of Artemisia vulgaris).
The most popular ‘internal’ method of traditional Chinese medicine is phytotherapy. It benefits from healing effects of plants and their combination. The medicine is prepared according to traditional ancient formulas. Application has different forms: infusions, teas, powders, balms and elixirs.

Q: What is the difference between psychology and psychotherapy?
A:
Psychology (from Greek psyché = soul, logos = study) is a study of human mental functions and behaviour. These are further divided into mental processes, conditions and characteristics, but this division is only abstract, since all of them cooperate. From historical point of view, psychology is a scientific method, which developed from philosophy as a study of soul. At the end of the 19th century psychology began to develop as a separate science.
Psychotherapy is an applied science based on psychology, which uses psychological laws and means to assist the patient and renew his/her mental health and personal growth. Consequently, it also affects physical health and improves everyday life. Psychotherapy contributes to positive changes in patient’s life and behaviour. Psychotherapy is used as psychological help to mentally healthy people, who seek to solve problematic issues of their lives or to improve their lifestyle, but it also aids people with mental disorders, whether as a primary treatment or supportive therapy, depending on the type of mental disorder.

Q: What does psychotherapy involve?
A:
There are several psychotherapeutic methods, which use different psychological means. Psychotherapeutic dialogue is the most commonly used technique. The interpersonal psychotherapeutic relationship between patient and his/her therapist is the crucial factor for a successful therapy. The quality of this relationship depends on how the patient trusts their therapist, whether they feel respected and secure, whether the therapist is able to understand them and accept them as they are and whether the interest in the patient is real and not only pretended.

Q: What does psychiatry deal with?
A:
Psychiatry is a medical discipline dealing with prevention, diagnostics and treatment of mental disorders. Modern psychiatry studies human character, mental processes, conditions, and behaviour through empirical inspection. It uses observations from other scientific disciplines and humanities such as physiology, cell biology, neurobiology, biochemistry, statistics, psychology, and social science. Medical treatment is a central part of the psychiatric treatment and influences mental functions through biochemistry.
